Cover letter with no experience — a full example

Last updated:

The commonest mistake in a first cover letter is apologising for the lack of experience in the opening line. Nobody hires an apology. A letter that works never mentions the gap at all — it replaces it with something concrete: a graduation project, volunteering, an internship, or a skill you taught yourself and can demonstrate.

The complete example

This is a guide, not something to send verbatim. Replace every number and company name with your own — a copied letter is easy to spot, and numbers that aren't yours fall apart in the interview.

I am writing to apply for the Customer Service Assistant role you advertised. What stood out to me was your emphasis on response times and customer satisfaction — the two things I spent two years learning to manage while volunteering on my university's events committee.

On that committee I dealt directly with more than 400 attendees across six events, handling enquiries and resolving problems on the spot. I set up the online registration schedule that cut waiting time at the door from 20 minutes to under 5. I am confident in Microsoft Excel and data entry systems, and I speak Arabic and English fluently.

I am available to start immediately and keen to learn quickly from your team. I would welcome the chance to meet and discuss how I could contribute — my CV is attached with the full detail.

What makes this role's letter different

Don't apologise for the gap

Delete any sentence beginning "although I have no experience". The employer wrote the advert and knows it's an entry-level role. Raising it only introduces a doubt that wasn't there.

Replace experience with evidence

Volunteering, internships, a graduation project and part-time work are all experience. Say what you did and put a number on it: people, hours, the result.

Say you can start now

Immediate availability is a genuine advantage to an employer filling an entry-level role, and most applicants forget to mention it.
